Ubidots in 2023: A Review of the Year Through Some of Our New Features

With the arrival of the last “dots” of the year, we proudly look back at the path we’ve traveled in 2023 thanks to your continued support and loyalty to Ubidots. Your feedback — priceless all the way from our Community forums to the face-to-face conversations at events around the world — has served as a lasting fuel that shaped our platform throughout 2023.

Having carried out the migration of our architecture to another cloud service provider, 2023 was an important year in our continuous search for improvement, opening the doors to greater stability and efficiency.

Always looking to provide a robust and comprehensive experience, we’re happy to go over a year’s worth of feature enhancements that contributed to that goal this year. In this post, we present you a brief overview of our past year through some of our developments.

Enhanced user management with Tags

The introduction of our new tag system elevated user management to a whole new level by allowing you to granularly control what is visible to your users. By creating tag matches between end users and devices, dashboards, reports, or events, you get to subdivide the resources of an organization that has many users with different needs and roles.

Multi-device Dashboard: Efficiency and clarity

This year also saw the introduction of the Multi-device Dashboard. Being able to choose multiple devices to visualize their data simultaneously not only increases the amount of data you can monitor, but also makes the process of aggregating multiple data sources easier.

Native widgets on demand with the Widget Plugin

With customization and autonomy always in our minds, we introduced Widget Plugins. With it, you can become an Ubidots widget developer and cater to your project, company, or clients in a custom, branded, and seamless way. By using a developer console within Ubidots, where you have complete control over HTML, CSS, and JS, the widgets you develop will become available in the dashboard’s widget drawer.

A Custom UI at your fingertips

Based on customer feedback, we developed the Custom UI Widget, a tool that allows you to mix UI components at will in order to build your own interface. This Swiss army knife of a widget can trigger a webhook to an UbiFunction or 3rd-party platform to process the input data — or just go to another Ubidots dashboard or an external link.

Runtime Widget: Easily monitor machine activity

We also increased our visualization options with the Runtime Widget, a tool that allows you to effortlessly monitor how long your devices have been active within a specified timeframe, allowing you to identify trends and make data-driven decisions.

OAuth 2.0 as the authorization protocol of your external application

Looking to increase operational security and control, we introduced the option of using OAuth 2.0 —an authorization protocol designed with the aim of granting limited access to a set of resources within a web service— in your account to give end users access to your Ubidots devices and variables through your external apps in a controlled and safe way.

Improvements to our Incidents Widget

Constant improvement is always a priority for Ubidots, and the changes made to the Incidents Widget were a prime example of this. This table-type widget allows you to keep a detailed record of each of your events, including their trigger time, trigger value, resolution status, and more, now with a better look and improved functionality.

Looking forward to 2024!

Motivated by the successful year that ends, we set new goals so that 2024 comes with even more innovation and solutions from the Ubidots team — something only possible thanks to your continued support and feedback.
