Usage metric wrong

Hi

“iSpindel Dashboard is consuming 4057 dots every time that it is charged . . . on November 24th it was loaded more than 75 times”. By charged I presume you mean refreshed?

As I explained in my previous post(s), the only output is via your web UI (/app/dashboards/xxx) which has not been used between 13th and 26th because the data generating device (iSpindel) was turned off.

The data device (iSpindel) was turned off on the 24th.

How can 4057 dots be consumed when there is no input and no output?

Andy

Any action that retrieves data from your account will consume dots out, including dashboard refresh. Details can be found at our help center.

You or anyone with a public dashboard link or access to your account have asked for data through the web app, that is what our logs show. For privacy reasons, we do not record details about data usage like IP, browsers, and so on, so I cannot give you additional hints about where your dashboards are being loaded or by who.

it does not matter if you turn off your device, as always as you load/refresh your dashboards or create queries to get CSV reports, load/refresh variables data, ask for scheduled reports, etc, you will consume dots out.

All the best

Hi

I suspect you are doing some API calls when a Dashboard is open. Hence - even if I never refresh the page - I am actually consuming dots.

Andy

Dear @andy.krafft,

I hope you are well.

We understand your frustration here, and we are doing our best to help you understand the reason behind your account dots consumption. That is why I requested the Dev team investigate where those consumptions were coming from. Jose jumped into this conversation and explained to you that we found that the dashboard in question is being loaded several times during the day. That’s the reason we advise you to check if you had shared the dashboard or any widget through a public link. Additionally, I am already doing some tests with a dashboard that has real-time disabled to guarantee that consumption is not being generated. If there is anything additional support we can bring you, please let us know.

All the best,
-Isabel

Hi Isabel

Have the dev team found anything? I see there are quite a few other people experiencing the same bug in your counting system as I have.

For instance, today I sat down at my desk at 8:30 am and pressed refresh on my main dashboard for the first time today. It said I had run out of dots: “You’ve retrieved 500464/500000 dots today”. Clearly this is impossible.

My dashboard loads on average about 4,000 dots. I have confirmed this by looking at the JSON in the browser. So I would have to refresh it every 4 minutes throughout my whole working day of 8 hours to exceed the limit. It is almost physically impossible to exceed this limit.

Please help.

Andy

Good day @andy.krafft,

I hope all is well

As mentioned in a previous note, the Dev team found that you are consuming most of the dots through the Dashboard by refreshing it several times during the day. Additionally, I have already made a test in Dashboards to verify that dots consumption is not being generated when real-time is not enabled. Now, the dots out consumption is not only generated through the Dashboards side, but also when the variable view is opened or by any data export. Please remember that the consumption count restarts at 00:00 UTC, which implies that can cover hours of two days in your time zone. Besides, the consumption that appear today is the one consumed the day before. In other words, the consumption indicated on January 12 is the one corresponding to January 11. I will investigate the recent consumption you mentioned to review where it is coming from, as soon as I have a report from the team I will let you know.

All the best,
-Isabel

Hi Isabel

It said I had run out of dots after the very first time I refreshed the dashboard that day. A single refresh of my dashboard is 4,000 dots.

I would have to refresh it 125 times (which is once every 4 minutes for 8 hours) to exceed the limit. This is just not possible.

I am based in the UK. Our current timezone is UTC so my midnight is your midnight.

Yes you made me aware of this in an earlier post of 28th October 2020.

Thank you.

Andy

Hi,Andy
So You already fixed all of this? Or still in progress?

Hi

No it is not fixed. There is still a bug in the system which occasionally reports that you used hundreds of thousands of Dots Out.

I consume less than 40,000 a day but some days - even some days when I haven’t used Ubidots - it suggests I’ve used over ten times that.

Andy

Hi @andy.krafft,

I hope you are doing well.

I want to clarify for the sake of informing the community that there is not an identified issue in the counting of dots out or in. I personally make sure that both dots in and out are being counted correctly based on the account consumption. Now, we are investigating the particular case of your account, to identify the reason for the number of dots out as you express you are not consuming the amount showed in your account usage. We hope to clarify this case sooner and if there is anything I can do in the meantime please let me know.

All the best,
-Isabel

Hi Isabel

Thanks for looking into this.

For the sake of clarity, I think it worth pointing out that it is not just the particular case of my account - I can find at least six posts on this forum stretching back to June that have experienced the same problem.

So it is not just confined to me.

Andy

Hi Isabel

Thank you for increasing my dots again. In case it helps your investigation, I have just had a notification: “You’ve retrieved 701772/700000 dots today”

I have not used the system any more than any other day.

Andy

Good day @andy.krafft,

I hope this note finds you well.

After sharing your case with our team and understating how frustrating could be to no be able to access your account data for reaching the dots limit, we decided to explore how to make the consumption visible and predictable to our users, until then, you don’t need to worry to reach out the limits again.

All the best,
-Isabel

Hi Isabel

Although it doesn’t fix the issue I think this is a very sensible idea - thanks.

Andy

Hi Isabel

I installed Network Sniffer. For some days there’s been no traffic unless I press refresh.

But suddenly I am getting traffic when I am away from my desk. It is happening quite frequently - many times a minute.

They all look similar to this and are all xmlhttprequest types:

Request Headers
URL: https://stem.ubidots.com/notifications/?EIO=3&transport=polling&t=NUCmDLq
Sec-Fetch-Site : same-origin
Sec-Fetch-Mode : cors
Sec-Fetch-Dest : empty

Response Headers
Server : nginx
Date : Wed, 10 Feb 2021 16:23:08 GMT
Content-Type : text/plain; charset=UTF-8
Content-Length : 103

Could this be causing the excessive Dots Out?

Andy

Hi @andy.krafft,

This should be happening only if you have the Real-Time option available or if you are making GET requests via API. Please let me know if none of the below is the case to further investigate based on your findings.

All the best,
-Isabel

Hi Isabel

I do not, and never have had, the Real-Time option turned on.

I do not use, and never have used, the API.

Andy

No, it doesn’t. The endpoint that you are referring to in your post is related to the notifications of your account, not with the dots out count.

All the best

Hi

Thanks for the clarification.

So is it just https://stem.ubidots.com/api/v1.6/widgets/xxxxxxxxx and https://stem.ubidots.com/api/v1.6/variables/xxxxxxxxxxx calls that will generate Dots Out?

Andy
